The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
University of Copenhagen
The University of Copenhagen is seeking an experienced Postdoc fellow to commence on 15 November 2023, or after agreement, for the Clemmensen Group at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR), University of Copenhagen.
About Us
The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research’s vision is to pioneer groundbreaking research towards better cardiometabolic health. We wish to lead collaborative interdisciplinary research from single-cell genomics to whole-body systems, transforming the basic understanding of cardiometabolic health, and accelerating its translation into prevention and treatment strategies. We were established in 2010, and in 2017, we moved into new laboratories, offices, and meeting rooms in the Maersk Tower www.maersktower.ku.dk.
The Center has around 260 employees who work in an international, highly collaborative research environment across a range of biomedical disciplines. You can read more about us here: www.cbmr.ku.dk.
Our Research
The Clemmensen Group studies the biological regulation of body weight and aims at developing new therapeutic strategies that can correct obesity and its metabolic comorbidities. Inspired and encouraged by our research in energy balance and neuroscience, we employ medicinal chemistry to engineer new drug candidates for the treatment of obesity and obesity-associated diseases. We utilize modified peptide hormones to deliver small molecules of interest to target cells, with the long-term aspiration to create new drugs that will lower the defended level of body fat.
Job Description
The growing obesity epidemic has escalated the progression of a series of non-communicable diseases, including type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). While efficient pharmacotherapies are in development for these disorders, an unmet need remains and there is urgent need for innovative basic research paving the way for new drugs. This current project will explore novel peptides and small molecule drug candidates for treatment of metabolic disease and will both involve design and synthesis of compounds as well as in vitro and in vivo testing in preclinical models.
Profile
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and experience:
Required qualifications:
- PhD in Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Molecular Biomedicine, or related sciences
- Excellent scientific track record (i.e., publications, training) in relation to career stage
- Profound knowledge on pharmacology, especially drug testing in preclinical obesity models
- Profound experience with synthetic chemistry, drug development, structure-activity relationship
- Knowledge on basic substrate metabolism and metabolic diseases, including obesity, type 2 diabetes and liver disease (e.g. NAFLD, NASH)
- A curious and innovative mindset with strong self-motivation to develop new knowledge and treatment for complex cardiometabolic disease
- Excellent English communication skills, both written and oral
The employment as Postdoc is a full-time position for 2 years. Starting date is 15 November 2023, or after agreement.
